Black ops has been out for some time now and we have most of the experimenting with new guns and perks out of our system, sticking to the few we each love. Yet some seem to have figured out interesting combos and niche setups that bring the pain every clan night. I have asked some of the more infamous pigs out there to share their wisdom and experience for anyone looking to up their game.
Each member interviewed for this article is a stone cold killer, so lets take a minute to meet the Pro’s -
Onslaught – A lightning fast killer who is always on the prowl, if you have never played against him count yourself lucky!
Fatal – Just as his name implies, he is walking death to anyone who gets in his way. His style is about control and once he has it he never gives it up.
Epik- A true operator, he will take you down from across the map with a headshot or just as easily burst fire your head clean off. Either way you are dead.
What is your favorite Tier 1 (Blue) Perk?
Onslaught: Scavenger hands down for me. I tend to survive long enough to need the extra ammo, and don’t trust the weapons I find on the ground unless I absolutely have to.
Fatal: Hardline mostly. I run 3,4,5 kill streaks and stack them throughout the game. If we are playing a good team that is getting a lot of killstreaks, my backup classes run Ghost. If we play tubers and guys that know how to throw grenades, I run Flak Jacket. Part of my strengths in Call of Duty come from being able to adapt on the fly and help the team the best way possible, staying alive is key.
Epik Fail: Scavenger, by far gotta have bullets to continue shooting people!
What is your favorite Tier 2 (Red) Perk?
Onslaught: Warlord. All of my weapons, with a few exceptions, have a silencer on them. So warlord gives me room to play with another attachment. Plus double grenades for pro! And with scavenger pro it will replenish them!
Fatal: Sleight of Hand. Aim faster, reload faster, case closed.
Epik Fail: Sleight of Hand. that fast reload has saved my but many times, and the pro perk for quicker aim down sight can give you that quarter of a second edge.
What is your favorite tier 3 (Green) Perk?
Onslaught: Used to be hacker, but I’m a Marathon Pro user now. The extra speed is exactly what I need for my aggressive play style.
Fatal: Marathon. I like to be in the action, all the time, but going straight from point A to point B is not always the easiest. Being able to sprint for longer distances helps get me where I need to be. If I am playing free for all, I run Ninja. Footsteps aren’t that big of a deal in a game type like domination with explosions ringing constantly, but in FFA, being able to silence your footsteps is a great asset.
Epik Fail: Marathon. I like to be able to get around faster but I am not a huge fan of the tier 3 perks (I don’t think there are any that are just hands down better than the others).
What is your favorite primary weapon? Which attachment(s)?
Onslaught:Commando has quickly become my favorite primary, over the AK74u. It’s got a nice punch and is pretty accurate. The rate of fire will lose every time if going toe-to-toe with the Famas, which is why you need to make those shots count! I slap on a suppressor and reflex sight for slightly quicker ADS.
Fatal:Famas. Fast fire rate, good clip size, good bullet spread while firing from the hip or ads. Attachment?: Extended mags. In mw2 I considered myself to be a top notch tuber (yeah… that doesn’t sound gay or anything), but in Black Ops, I need my extra bullets. I am not an accuracy whore by any means, I have no issues unloading all my ammo every time I spawn.
Epik Fail:This definitely depends on range. Sniping: L96A1 w/ extended mag (sometimes you only 1 shot so the gun that takes them down with 1 bullet more often than not gets the edge), Medium-Long (counter sniping): M16 w/ ACOG just phenomenal anti sniping weapon with an ACOG attached. Medium range: Famas w/ Grenade Launcher or Silencer if I am feeling sneaky (the Famas can take down an enemy faster than any other AR if you can keep it on target, but play with what you like that placebo effect is usually more useful than technical stats.) Close range: AK74U w/ rapid fire is a BEAST.
What is your favorite secondary weapon?
Onslaught:I usually run a Makarov of some sort, extended mags, suppressor, or dual.
Fatal: M1911 Extended Mags. A lot of folks enjoy the auto fire option on the CZ, but spraying with a pistol doesn’t work for me. The 1911 packs a punch, and has a great clip size with extended mags.
Epik Fail: LAW (sniping with rockets and you can shoot stuff down gotta love the dual use for everything but sniping at which point the 1911 w/ extended mag.
What is your favorite equipment?
Onslaught: Claymore…they are far more beneficial for more than just covering your ass. I can usually rely on my Claymore to get me a kill per life. Just have to plant them smart, in high traffic areas with angles that hide the red beams.
Fatal: Claymores. Just like the rotisserie oven on the TV, set it and forget it is my motto. However, if we are playing a team of try-hard MLG kids, I need a tactical insertion. Being able to control your spawn in a objective game is HUGE in black ops.
Epik Fail: Claymore is really all I use.
What is your favorite class setup and how you like to play them?
Onslaught: Roll everything I described into one class, and you’ve got my favorite class! With the addition of nova gas, which has several purposes. Because I like to flank and get behind the enemy, I often find myself in bad situations to reload. If you need to reload while being chased, turn and throw a nova gas to give yourself some time. It works every time (unless they have a tactical mask which is unlikely.) I stick to the sides of the map for the most part, always trying to make sure I’ve got cover on one side.
Fatal:As I said before, I like to adapt to every game on the fly. Every game is different, and every player is different. Over the years playing first person shooters, you catch on and learn how “big of a hardass” someone thinks they are real quick, and the trick is to just outsmart them, not outwork them.
My first go to class if I know we are going to kick some timmy ass?:
Primary: Famas Extended Mag
Secondary: M1911 Ext Mag
Lethal: Frag (frags can get in to LOTS of places Semtex can not)
Tactical: Concussion (all about speed)
Equip: Claymore
Tier 1: Hardline
Tier 2: Sleight of Hand
Tier 3: Marathon
If we NEED B, and I mean we FUCKING NEED B, I will switch my tier 1 to flak jacket. Sometimes I like to be an asshole and use RPGs and C4 on this class, but it all depends on what map we are playing. I need time (and lots of cover) to shoot RPGs and throw C4, otherwise I keep the class the same. If we are getting stomped, I’ll throw on the ghost, shoot some air support down, and hold the spawn so my team doesn’t get spawn trapped. I know the spawns very well on all the maps in black ops, but not everyone does, being able to escape your spawn is an adventure in itself sometimes. Some of my classes are map exclusive. I run a lightweight AK74u with extended mags and a Semtex, ONLY on summit. Check my file share sometime and you will see why
Epik Fail:I love to snipe but that’s not particularly viable in Black Ops if you ask me. I wrote up a massive sniping tip guide once but I think its been lost to the old 2o2p site. I’ll offer some general play tips though: 1) only show as much of yourself as necessary. I always see players standing upright and exposed in widows and whatnot. If you are watching a lane back up or crouch so that you only see just what you need to. Sure you cant see as much but generally you cut your profile way down as well. 2) Burst fire: Black Ops is all about recoil control so if you are trying to snag that medium to long range kill burst fire. 3) Don’t miss, people always want to know what makes one player better than the other. There are two answers to this I think: the ability to think (outsmart the other) and accuracy. When I get into a 1 on 1 situation whether I win or lose almost always comes down to whether or not I can keep my reticule on the other guy or not. 4) F*ck timmy: I don’t care if he doesn’t like tubes or shotguns or whatever if that stuff works use it on him. 5) Headsets rock and pay attention. I cant count the number of times I have survived because I heard timmy sneaking up and saw we had no guy on the minimap coming to me. Also watch the minimap and objective flags (mainly for domination.) I get a lot of defends because I almost always notice when they start blinking (means someone is taking the point.) The announcer guy doesn’t always tell you in time that someone is jacking B but it ALWAYS flashes instantly when an enemy is on your flag; this is also a good way to know if someone is taking the point or just ran through.
What are your favorite kill streaks?
Onslaught: Blackbird, Chopper Gunner, Dogs or Hind. The key is to get to 8 for the blackbird, light up the map, and getting to 11 is cake when you know exactly where the enemy is.
Fatal:Usually I run 3,4,5. UAV, Counter-UAV, Care package (I do NOT call in care packages when I get them, I stack them throughout the game until we have a decent lead, and then proceed to call them in and use Hardline to change them when needed.) When I play, I like to have a UAV up the whole game. If we are playing a team and I see 4 or more dots on the screen, I know I can be more aggressive.
Epik Fail: Dogs or chopper gunner but SAM turret is probably the greatest new addition to the lineup.
What is the best single piece of advice you could offer to new players?
Onslaught:Don’t be afraid to be aggressive. The element of surprise is highly rewarding in CoD. In any given map, I typically find myself literally running circles around the map racking up the kills as I go.
Fatal: If it isn’t working, try something new. We all have different personalities, and different play styles; but the key is to find something that suites you, and gives you joy in the game. Every weapon, attachment, perk, etc. has it’s advantages and disadvantages, work with all of them and mix and match to find something that makes the game more fun for you. Oh yeah, and if running straight up the middle to B is getting your ass killed over and over and over and over and over and over……….. pick another path sir, your trail of dead bodies are getting in the way.
Epik Fail: Best tip I can give is decrease your exposure as much as possible.
Special thanks to Onslaught 03, FaTaLxBoNgHiTx, and Epik Fail.

Great article and great tips. It will definitely make me re-think a few things.
Umm…yeah, I’ve played with these three guys and their kills usually rival the combined total of everyone else so I’d listen up. Good article Nejin.
Excellent interview with 3 great players. It’s nice to see the similarities and differences in each player’s thought process in attacking the game.
Thanks for the info guys. It has already helped my game!!!
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
