Memorial Day

Pork Chop Platoon remembers and extends gratitude to the the men and women of the Armed Services who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

We would like to give special thanks  and remeberance to our members’ loved ones who were lost in the line of duty.

From DaRedneck, “I had a great Uncle that was KIA in Germany.  He was a PFC in the Army.  WWII was over and he was headed back to the states.  He had jumped in a convoy so he could get to a base where he was going to hop on a plane to come back home.  The Jeep he was in ran off a cliff and down the side of a mountain killing all the servicemen on board.  His name was BM Jackson Burnham but they called him Jack.  He was only 20 years old.  He died in Nurnberg, Germany on November 13, 1946 at 2230 hours.”

From Ubutuaddicted, “John Wiley. Pilot in WW2 shot down over Italy, never found.”

It is traditional to place poppies on the resting place of fallen soldiers on Memorial Day and to pause for a moment of silence at 3:00 PM for prayer, reflection, or meditation in remberance of all those who gave their lives for us and our freedom.

Below is the poem that is ressponsible for the traditional use of poppies as a way to memorialize our fallen soldiers.  It was written in the trenches of WWI.

“In Flanders Fields ” By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)  Canadian Army

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 31st.
